Interesting wiki & presentation! You managed to cover most of the bits and pieces of how new media helped fashion evolve, spread & be accessible to everyday regular kind of people.

I'd love to add a couple of points which you might find some way helpful!

1 - New media & modern technology helped in the process of fashion forecasting and trend prediction. When you check websites like:

http://www.stylesight.com

http://www.stylelist.com

http://www.polyvore.com

You'll notice how these tools helped in adding more information and data to the process by average, not fashion professional individuals! On top of that, Fashion-insiders exclusive information that was only available to Retail executives is now in the public domain which will push Trend prediction further more and give it a more accepted sense of style that can be practiced on everyday life!

New media also allowed large fashion businesses to cut the huge budget on travelling to different countries to stay in touch with the new fashion trends, by recruiting people from all over the world and let them contribute remotely by sending photos of new trends as they emerge and seen on the streets. New media with its current platforms allowed fashion businesses to take information from remote reporters and use it to track the trends via social media.

It's funny when you think about how instead of visiting the local fashionable hangouts to stay in touch with the fashion world or get some insight on the latest trends has been shifted to visiting the local blogs or social-media communities even by the most famous names in the industry!

As an effect the fashion business does not have launch date for new trends or color, it instead seems to be in a perpetual state of updating and reporting, and the instant feedback the trends receive from customers allowed the industry's big names to alter & modify it to suits what's accepted and desired from those who are on the other end!

2 - The other point I wanted to talk about is the use of new media to provide the customers with an added value. Take Valentino's latest campaign for example: REDValentino (
http://blog.redvalentino.com).

"external

They used the QRCodes (
http://www.facebook.com/REDValentino?sk=app_239088006115539) to visually narrate "a contemporary fairytale that combines freshness and classic style. Glamorous, romantic and playful." where "REDValentino revisits, through innovative visual language, the timeless beauty of Valentino, for a girl who is naturally feminine and confident, yet retains a delicate innocence."

It's a way of giving their clients an incentive to buy & a sense of exclusivity. More info about REDValentino:

I definitely think that apps are going to become a primary form of business, in terms of purchasing garments, for the fashion industry - more so than they are at present. Social media avenues are currently being exhausted for all of their marketing possibilities, where it is now mobile apps gathering significant force. The difficulty is in predicting how new media is going to be implemented in the future. Trend fore-casting is certainly a valid suggestion, where the means of doing so could alter depending on technological inventions. Guess we'll have to wait and see...
Hi Steph and the rest of you

I really like your wiki post and I think you are right when you suggest Second Life as a future revenue area for the fashion industry.

Another example of this is Diesel who already has engage in a partnership with Sony, as they sell their designs in Sonys virtuel world: Playstation Home.:

Diesel doesn’t use the money they earn from this in their organization, it is transferred to a fund, but it could just as well be a part of Diesels business model and a part of their way to target a new and emerging group of customers.

Something I also agree with is the emerging two-way communication that the design-houses has with their customers. Nike has already started to use the new technology to let the customer co-design their close, shoes etc. In this way the design is still Nike’s, but they let the customer interact and thereby feel more attached to the product and the brand.

I can certainly see how designers could use a printed 3D model of bodies. If the designer had a 3D model of the human models they use in their runway fashion shows, it would be a lot easier to make the outfits fit. Also if I was a designer and I e.g. was asked to design a unique outfit for a celebrity, it would probably make it a lot easier for me and for the customer, if I had a 3D model I could try the clothes on or even just look at, to get a visual idea of the person I was designing for.

Is this a “way out there” thought, or do you also think that this could be a new way to easily mediate body-measurements over distance?

Apologies again for not meeting with the group today. I do really appreciate your understanding! :)

As discussed this morning, I understand your topic will focus on the development of new media (specifically the technological aspect) within society, and perhaps some speculations on the evolving nature of this, and what we can expect to experience in the future re new media and associated technology.

I've made a few notes below that I though were interesting:

• Crowd Sourcing

As per our discussion in class today and the reading (Tom Hulme: The Wisdom of Crowd Sourcing), Crowd sourcing is the act of outsourcing tasks, traditionally performed by an employee or contractor, to an undefined, large group of people or community (a "crowd"), through an open call.

I found this really interesting - as it also links in with the rise of the ProAm (professional amateur). The rise of the ProAm and the consequential "Crowd Sourcing" has both negative and positive aspects:

Positive:

- Allows EVERYONE to be "creative"

- Allows everyone (with the means) to access free entertainment e.g YouTube

- Encourages collaboration and innovation of the arts amongst "main stream public" thus ensuring that the arts live on and continue to be valued and seen as useful by society.

Negative:

- Where does this leave the professional - less $$$? And will the professional be less valued in our community? We already see this with actors - once an established profession which required many years of Shakespearean training - now it seems anyone can do it???

- Does the ease of access (web) take away from the tradition of the arts and creativity? - E.g do we miss out on the experience of going to the theater??? Will all traditional arts and creativity be viewed online one day??? I hope not!

www.userfarm.com

- I liked the idea of "Blog notes" and "Citizen Report"

• What are the latest new media trends???

- Social networks - FB, Twitter, foursquare etc. Also check out this site for the latest:

http://www.socialmediaexaminer.com/22-hot-new-social-media-tools-worth-exploring/

- What is creative about any of the above? Perhaps they were creatively produced but does the user gain creativity or inspiration from these tools? Is the collaboration inherent in these new media tools the creativity?

- Why do we use these?

What do we, as users and creative individuals value from these mediums? Are we learning from them?

• What does the future hold?

Touching on your idea re technology and our future relation to it, I've made a few points below with some supporting links:

- What happens to our social media accounts when we die?

http://www.ted.com/talks/adam_ostrow_after_your_final_status_update.html

- A culture of desire, a world where wanting to be famous is an acceptable career choice, and being uneducated in "cool". Is this the future that new media is creating for us?

http://www.ted.com/talks/malcolm_mclaren_authentic_creativity_vs_karaoke_culture.html

(It does go for a while, but it is quite a good talk)

- New media - "It is no longer the realm of those who know computer programming"

I hope some of these ideas helped?! If you would like to write back or even give me a call to discuss further, I'd be more than happy to help further. Even if you wanted any additional info on any notes above - I can do some more research. Just let me know :)

Thanks Steph and all the best with the assessment!

Cheers,

I was only able to write notes whilst we were chatting because it's quite difficult to try and contribute, but I will highlight the main points that I recorded.

In essence, I've decided that I'm going to focus on fashion and fashion innovations. I haven't done much research on the topic as I recently (aka today) changed. Either way, I will investigate whether or not there is some specific technology that is revolutionising fashion, whether or not there is a particular trend evident within the industry that incorporates new media, and whether or not a particular company/brand has is trialing a form of new media to market themselves differently. So yeah, I'll narrow in on one of those once I've done the prelim research.

I was going to mention Apps and how this avenue in itself has exploded with the amount of contributions, be they from amateurs, fashion bloggers or established designers.

If I do find a particular company/brand is trying something different and it has been successful in increasing sales, I could use them as a case study to show how they started, and how their practice has changed. Then, I could make a prediction about the future in the field, relating it back to them.

I was also going to mention the "Everything is a Remix" video seeing as fashion is very much an adaptation of past ideas, the transformation of those ideas, and then the creation of something new.

Tom Hulme's comments about crowd-sourcing/his talk in general would also be good to incorporate.

Ta daa! That is the key stuff that I got out of our group chat/tute session. The links you posted are definitely food for thought...

Thanks again
