Points from group discussion:

- Shazam: good advertising and promotion

- Collaboration: put your songs in an ad and promote yourself that way.

- The CD’s celling rate hasn’t changed and the Vinyl selling rate has gone up.

- Should they make all electronic music free?

- Itunes has changed the music industry – you can buy songs individually, rate, comment, promote.

- Should we have cd-albums in virtual stores.

- Crowd sourcing marketing: if you like this, you might also like that.

- Is piracy bad?

- Fans participating – If you use my songs and change it, you uploade it, so I can get it too, get inspired and use yours – could that be a new model?

- Mike Topkins: has promoted himself on Youtube and is now selling his songs on Itunes. No manager, no music-company – no studio - just himself.

The wiki content

So I think I will write about the hybrid model in the music industry. First I will introduce the concept of the hybrid model and then connect it to the music industry through examples. At the end I will try to look at what is coming.

My thought is that I will use the same topic for my case study, but here I will go further into one example (for instance Itunes) and talk about what it does differently and how it changes the industry.

Hi Mette,

Sounds like an interesting topic! I've made a few notes below on your comments above:

1) I found some interesting stats on the ARIA website:http://www.aria.com.au/pages/statistics.htm

Most notably there was an 80% decline in physical singles sales between 2009 and 2010.

2) I also found it interesting that musicians are now being sold on to digital distributors - who then make sure the bands songs get listed on iTunes and other

online music stores. Essentially a band could be completely digital in this case - and never even meet their fans or producers in person. This idea definitely

lends itself to the rise of the ProAm - and makes being a successfully musician easy for those in more remote areas.

3) A good example of a "digital band" would be "Gorilliaz". "Gorillaz" is actually a project started up by 2 musicians and is comprised of a digital band, a virtual world, and animated characters. They have also made their own version of the iPad - the iElectribe. You can read more about them here:

http://gorillaz.com/

http://thefall.gorillaz.com/

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gorillaz

4) There is also a very interesting article that talks about the death of the "old music industry":

http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1576838/old-music-business-dead-whats-next.jhtml

They also mention in the article RCRD LBL - the site gives away free downloads, bands are paid an advance and they make a profit from the advertising on the

site. This would be a great way to start off in the industry.

5) MySpace.com

This might be something interesting to note in relation to how bands are selling their music in the digital realm. A lot of bands have got their start from a

successful cult following on MySpace, and now many established bands have their owns pages on MySpace.com - just to be a part of the scene. It also gives them

another avenue to sell their music through.

http://au.myspace.com/adelelondon/music

6) Future considerations

Just a few thoughts on this....

It seems as though new media is now an essential part of the life of most Gen X & Gen Y. So in order for the music industry to continue to make an impact on us

they will need to tap into what we interact with each day - the internet. As I've noted above the music industry are already heavily involved with digital sales

and social networking sites, but where to next? I really liked your thoughts on fans participating - and I think this could likely be a future trend for the

industry. This was a very good article: http://www.creativedeconstruction.com/2010/02/fan-participation-and-the-democratization-of-music/

I hope this has helped?! Let me know if I can help in any other way at all. Also feel free to email or call if you need to work through any thoughts.

Thanks and happy blogging!

Here is an article talking about how music industry can generate revenue though new media. I think you might get some ideas from this post. It mentions several points including:

 Digital Downloads

- Can Unsigned Artists be digitally distributed through iTunes?

- Webcasting Royalties

- Public Performance Royalties for Internet Licenses

- Music Used in Video Games and on Your Mobile Phone

These points are supported by real cases and price numbers. Hope the information is useful for your post or assignment.

Thank you for your responses. Unfortunately I didn't get to look it through before my post, but I'd still like to comment on it.

First it was some very good articles you found, but they were both from 2007. Through my research I recovered, that the music industry is going really fast at the moment. Applications is opening and shutting down in seconds, and artists are trying a lot of different things for shorter or longer periods, so even articles from 2007 is usually outdated.

As you also mentioned, Michelle, I really do think that fan participation will be something we’ll see more of in the future. Most artist already use MySpace, Facebook, Twitter and their homepage to communicate with their fans, but not many is actually having an interaction. Artist like Lady Gaga and Kaiser Chiefs, who I mentioned in my wiki, is starting to show how the relationship between artists and fans could change - which I also find quite interesting. As you mention, Michelle, Gorillaz is also a band, who knows how to make and keep their fan community. I think that especially the ability to keep the fan community satisfied is crucial for any artist today, as our attention is so easily withdrawn to other things.

I've done some internet scouting and found these videos/sites that I thought could be helpful in developing your structure for the case study, or at least provoking thought.

The Future of the Music Business: video update by Futurist and Speaker Gerd Leonhard

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tzt-bkPDfdc

Music 2.0 - The Future of the Music Industry in less than 3 minutes

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_IjIZGEaa2k

--> these videos are just good, starting-off points that give you a summary of the situation and pose questions about the future of the music industry.

I think that the following article, "Music industry banks on free in effort to get paid" by Yinka Adegoke and posted on Saturday (http://in.reuters.com/article/2011/09/17/idINIndia-59388520110917) is extremely relevant and includes some of the main topics you discussed in your wiki and pitch like the ramifications of free music. It incorporates how companies are trying to encourage a hybrid form, where some music is free, but a subscription is preferred to gain the added benefits.

Paul Mason's article, "Cranking up the live music industry" posted online yesterday also raises these issues and could be helpful for your case study (http://www.abc.net.au/unleashed/2906372.html).

Furthermore, this book, "The Future of the Music Business: How to Succeed with the New Digital Technologies - 2nd edtn" by Steve Gordon (http://www.amazon.com/Future-Music-Business-Guides-Leonard/dp/1423454456/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1278519731&sr=1-1) focuses specifically on the business models, where you can find his blog here: http://www.futureofthemusicbusiness.biz/

Anyway, let me know what you think about those sources, and whether they're along the lines of what you were thinking.

Cheers

That is some excellent research you have done, and I’d like to give you a response even though it might be a bit dull reading:

To Najla

Re link 1 & 2: As these two videos address; I really like the fact that New Media makes it easier for musicians to reach their target group and to distribute their music. New Media is definitely not a bad thing for the music industry.

Re link 3: I personally think The Godfather Method is a brilliant business model, which I’ve also explained briefly in the wiki under the “Free” model, and I will definitely use it as reference.

Re link 4: This podcast argues that more people are using legal music instead of illegal music. I did also come across this podcast in my research, but could not find the reference, so I didn’t find it eligible. As the podcast also indicates, the research is based on a particular area, where there has been an intimidating campaign just before the investigation, and also they count in all the people that use free streaming models. My conclusion is therefore that it is an overinterpretation, when they suggest that the music industry is getting rid of the illegal downloading.

Re link 5: The “property” (copyright) discussion, which this link is about, is also a very current discussion, which at the moment seems to be kind of stuck. I will use your link as a reference.

Re link 6: I also really like this last blog-post you have made, which also argue that a new business model will be based on nurturing fan-relationship. In a business model view I will not include it as it doesn’t provide a fully explained model, but I will probably use it for my report topic, where the fan-artist relationship is in focus.

Thank You for your input

To Stephanie

Re link 1 & 2: Gerd Leonhard has got the point, copyright doesn’t work, the cloud is the future, network is the new in-word and flexibility plus risk-taking is needed in the music-industry. I’m downloading his free book at this very instant. ;-)

Re link 3: The observations this article does, about the current situation in the music industry is very interesting and up to date. I am really excited to see especially where Rdio is going, as I think they are on to some of the right things and of course because they are Danish. ;-) The reference has been made.

Re link 4: This link talk about how musicians should earn more money from live music and that the live music industry should grow. I agree on this, especially because the “Free” and “Hybrid” model count on this revenue to work.

Re link 5 & 6: Steve Gordon seems like an interesting man – I am definitely going to stalk him some more.
