Introducing several social media policies in different organizations will be the first part. Then I will discuss some laws relating to social media, such as copyright, by looking at real cases. Finally, the ethics part will underline how the cyber bully happens via social media. Hope I could develop these points well in this post. :)
Hi Sabrina,

Apologies for not getting back to you sooner! I've been at the hospital the last few days with my partner - he's just yesterday had his appendix out! So it's been a busy few days!...

I've got a few notes here that relate to the points you are looking at discussing:

1. Social Media Policy

Social media policies allow corporations and business to monitor and manage the interaction of the public and internal staff via all social media related to the business. However the dilemma is the speed at which social media develops and the ability for policies to keep up. Its areas that MUST ensure secure social media that are at the forefront of the policy game - groups like the Military, banking and education.

Here is a good article about the Military and their use of social media policies. It’s from January this year – but still relevant: http://www.socialmediapolicytemplates.com/social-media-policy-government/army-social-media-policy/129/

I though it interesting that Walsh suggests having the social media policy as part of a company’s Policy and Procedure document. But also ensuring that it in itself is a standalone document, with one person or a group of people assigned to keep it updated. Wow! Doesn’t this just show how much new media is now a part of our lives?! Not only the fact that the social media policy is now to be considered a part of the standard Policy and Procedure document, but that people are being assigned to keep this updated – so new jobs created just to keep companies in the clear with new media!

A thought about the future here – maybe we will be relying on groups like the Military, banking and education to lead the way in social media policy? It seems likely as they are the ones who need to make sure their policies are water tight. Will we see more jobs specific to writing social media policy? Will we see more legal social media policy roles evolving?

Lastly – here’s a cool twitter link – dedicated to Social Media Policy!

2. Laws relating to social media policy

I feel like I’ve touched on this a little in my comments above – however –here are some interesting articles that may help!

http://www.digital-media.net.au/article/Legal-Social-Is-there-a-Social-Media-Law/512428.aspx

I thought Burrows comments regarding gathering information about policies form twitter interesting – as it highlights the speed at which social media policies really do move. However the question here is – although there are policies in place what legislation will back these up? And are these all up to date?

http://www.socialnetworkinglawblog.com/

I found this really interesting – and thought it could be useful for you. I thought the article about the new online communications law in Missouri very interesting! Although a great idea – it seems very vague and all encompassing of all online activities. As the article says does this mean that teachers can’t talk to students or parents outside of the school at all??? Exactly what do “all online communications” extend to exactly? And does this relate to retired teachers and grown up students? What about those who have already established communications online – will this all need to be stopped now?

3. Ethics of Social Media Users

Cyber Bullying

I found this site informative – and it’s existence alone very interesting! A whole site dedicated to cyber bullying?! Wow that’s impressive!

http://www.stopcyberbullying.org

I guess the hard part really is to draw the line on cyber bullying. What constitutes cyber bullying exactly? The site notes a few key factors: kind of threat, frequency, the source, the nature of the threat etc.

Also here are some examples of the results of cyber bullying:

http://www.allfacebook.com/facebook-adds-more-ways-to-report-bullies-2011-03

4. Extra things!

Also here are a few extra things on ethics and developing media...

I hope this has helped? Let me know if I can do anything else to help or if you want to run through and ideas.

Thanks :)

I've found plenty of info online regarding ethics and social media, where I'll include some really good references below that are more general, and will also try to include sites/videos a bit more relevant to your case study topic (I hope) i.e. how the classroom is going to evolve in the future --> I predict that cyber bullying is going to dominate over the "traditional" form of real life bullying, which is potentially more dangerous as the bullies can continue their taunts unidentified.

Great Wiki! :) Well thought out and a great read!

Don’t forget to add your summary to the Home page.

A couple of comments on your post and the discussions form the rest of the group:

1. Universal Internet Laws

I agree with your closing comment: “The development of a universally-accepted code of ethics stating what is classified as appropriate and inappropriate behavior is the first step to ensuring company reputations are not affected by its employees, and that individuals take ownership for their posts, considering how their actions may affect others”

This definitely seems the way to ensure that SMP are recognized and enforced. However can we develop a universal code if our online laws differ from country to country?

I found this website overwhelmingly informative! http://www.weblaw.edu.au/display_page.phtml?WebLaw_Page=Cyberlaw

The more I read – the more confusing and contradictory these laws got. For me - “the average Joe” these laws are far too complicated to follow (that is on an international standard). Nationally – we can easily follow what is expected of us and thus not break and online laws. However it is the merging of online countries which muddies the waters. SMPs aside – the international internet laws are complex! As I’ve mentioned in my last post it seems there is a demand and a need for more internet legislation gurus – and I’m sure we’ll see many jobs in the future solely dedicated to this cause.

Here are just a few examples of internet legal jobs and education prospects:

hmmm...maybe I should reconsider my career path – I think these guys will be in great demand in the future! ;)

2.Cyber Bullying

Steph and Najla – you made some great comments and links about this so I won’t add too much more.

Sabrina - I liked your section on Cyber Bullying – it was neatly packaged and you got your point across well.

It does seem scary to think that our children may be subject to such indivisible nastiness doesn’t it? What can we do to protect them from this? Are regulations of the “Big Brother” type necessary? Or do we need to take a leaf out of our parents book – let them learn to fight their own battles – maybe trust them a little? It’s hard to answer this when you are not a parent. So here are some thoughts from parents:

http://icognito.com/Cyberbullying/what-should-i-do-if-my-child-is-a-cyber-bully.html

WARNING: The following video is a little disturbing, and as someone who has recently lost a close family member to suicide I did find this hard to watch. It is a news story – but the content may be disturbing for some.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VLTj3WBmY1k&feature=relatedhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VLTj3WBmY1k&feature=related

I found the Mother’s comments regarding the lack of law enforcement actions very relevant! How could these people not be prosecuted?! Is this a gap in the regulation of new media laws?

Another interesting media article:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/parents/cyber_bullying/

3. Where to Now?

After reading and watching all of the above the future for an ethical new media platform seems bleak, and I’m tempted to pack up my belongings and start a new life in some far remote area free from any forms of new media! However we all know that won’t happen...(until 2011?)

Jokes aside...

There are many good things streaming on the WWW. Ultimately I believe that the internet and all forms of social media are reflective of our society – not the other way around. So let us tackle these issues on the internet by addressing the real life problems that these stem from – our own values and morals! I’ll leave you with some feel good links!

Looking through the wiki and all your comments, I must say, you are some really good researchers. I don’t think I can add a lot more to that, so instead I will just give you some of my thoughts on the topic.

Businesses are making policies to control their employees’ behavior online and schools are making rules and policies to make sure how their students’ behave online. Both business and schools can however only control their people when they’re inside these spaces. In the people’s own private sphere, there are no rules and policies. So as Michelle also commented, do the governments of each country make up policies and laws? And if they do, which laws do you obey under, when you as a Danish girl sit in Australia looking at a Chinese webpage? It will be interesting to see if we will need laws online or if our offline laws can apply online and how all this will work together across borders.
