I think one of the main outcomes of social media is that the world is getting closer. It let us have a look into the way other cultures conduct their way of lives and into the problems they are having and may or may not deal with. I see two outcomes of this. First it makes us question the way we do things in our own lives, countries and cultures. Second, it let us meddle in or even intervene in other peoples lives. Looking at these points it is easy to see how social media and politics are closely connected. You, Michelle, take a look into some of the more radical and obvious examples of this, but I also find all the small things interesting. I wonder if the effect of social media in the end is, that all people in the world across cultures and distance will share values, believes and assumptions, so that the culture differences we talk a lot about today, becomes non-existing?[1.] Probably social media is speeding up the globalization process.

Comparing with these countries mentioned in your wiki, China government has controlled and censored the Internet especially in social media. Here are some articles about social media in China.
Like I said in our group discussion after the seminar, I think that you have definitely cottoned on to some key ideas, and have communicated the core concepts really well. The summary is a really good synopsis of the situation, but perhaps you could condense some of the information at the start of the Wiki so that you can discuss the ramifications of new media use in political dealings. I think that you should present various views of well-informed people that know and understand the complexities of the problem, and what their forecast is for new media's role in future events/dealings. After that, you could provide your own view regarding the future consequences and naturally, say why you're assuming a certain standpoint.

That's pretty much all I think you need to add in because overall it's really good. Let me know if you need any help.

I've added some future considerations at the bottom of the Wiki now - have a look and let me know what you think? I found it difficult to add in any extra info without going over the word limit (even after cutting out some from the beginning and middle).

It's a difficult subject to broach without seeming cocky or like a know it all - so I hope my comments seem fair and unbiased. As I mentioned in class it's so easy for us to assume from an outsiders view - but it's a whole different ball game for those living it day to day. I hope I've expressed that clearly enough in my Wiki?

The recent events in Egypt that you discussed Michelle, or the London riots, are brilliant examples of human kind's requirement for a voice. I personally think that if the governments had surveyed a (statistically) random group of citizens from all walks of life to gain insight into their perspectives, such revolts would not have occurred. By assuming what the citizens needed vs didn't need and/or stifling them, this caused further destruction - in physical form. And this was on top of the current emotional distress and cultural divide.

To be honest, I am thankful that the Egyptians and immigrants in London had the platform of new media, and more specifically, social media, to communicate their thoughts and opinions. I do not agree with the violence and recklessness that ensued, but they deserved to be able to speak their minds freely, and without censorship. If in the future this continues to be achieved through social media, then so be it.

In an ideal world, the use of violence/vandalism should be avoided to convey the marginalised population's beliefs, however passive forms are usually ineffective at being acknowledged, and more importantly, addressed by governments. The government's lack of recognition of the appeals made by said marginalised individuals using Facebook (in the form of petitions) or the number of Twitter followers (supporting the ideas of a specific person) is a clear indication of their ignorance to new media's influence on society. Consequently, this simply reaffirms that the tried and tested last resort of violence is an effective tactic to employ. It is a shame that tension has to escalate to such an extent in order for the government or media to notice, where even when they do respond, it may not achieve the desired outcome of those revolting.

I hope that in the future new media does not succumb to censorship's grips and that there is always a way, that there is always some avenue that has been created, in which a person can speak their mind. Yes, in the majority of scenarios we probably will not completely agree with another individual's opinions, but that opposition to their beliefs should be negated by an overarching understanding and respect for their basic right to freedom of speech. Hopefully social media, or another form of new media, will continue to provide such an outlet.

Hi Guys,

I can't work out how to link my references in the text? Any help greatly appreciated! :)

Re the actual content - I've got a few addition thoughts below I'd like to share!

Face book page: http://www.facebook.com/elshaheeed.co.uk

I've been watching this page and have noted the continued progress. In our western mainstream news we rarely hear about what's happening in Egypt now - but as you can see there has been plenty of activity on the page - now at over 145,000 likes! Also 71 comments on the last post - just goes to show you how fast new media is and how behind or (perhaps blind sighted) our traditional media is in the west.

Also here are Asmaa Mafouz's additional vlogs. These will give you an idea of just how effective Mafouz's vlogs were. Her initial video condemned the lack of support she witnessed in her first protest, however after the success of that first inspirational vlog her tone changes to encouragement and praise for all those who turned out to the protest.

Secondly I wanted to give you some more examples of new media and politics:

Free Libyan Virtual Army: http://shababliby.com/shabab/?p=773

A very current topic, and it is quite strange to watch these groups on Facebook and Twitter grow and develop - all the while knowing that they probably expand to the strength of groups like We are all Kahled Said.

It's interesting to note the complexities of Libya's digital revolutionaries. In contrast to Egypt - Libyan nationalists and Gaddafi supporters are also spreading their voice over the internet, and sometimes it's difficult to work out exactly who believes in what or who supports who. However I think these guys (The Free Libyan Virtual Army) have it sorted out, and do explain it very well on their website. If anything I think the 'enemies' embrace of the digital media world has only strengthened their stance - as with Egypt it was so easy to see who was pro or anti Mubarak.

A very different story in Libya...

Social media in China

Thanks for your links Sabrena - very interesting! I thought it was all so strangely similar to what we use here in Australia - i.e Facebook, Twitter - but just a different version - 'same but different'. Also I thought the stats on how and why youth use social media very similar to how we use it in Australia - connecting with friends, playing games etc. I did wonder though - how much of this is censored? As discussed in class, new media isn't as free as in countries like Australia - so exactly how and why is it censored???? A few thoughts below on this:

Perhaps the reason for censorship is the fear of uprising and the spread of anti government conversations? From a few readings I've found it seems that the media in censored on the basis of criticism of government, and they have even extend this to the creation of their own social media and networking applications such as Sina Weibo (http://www.globalpost.com/dispatch/news/regions/asia-pacific/china/110609/china-internet-blog-sina-weibo-english).

Here is an interesting article about the impact of western celebrity of Sina Weibo: http://www.globalpost.com/dispatches/globalpost-blogs/weird-wide-web/radiohead-2011-china-sina-weibo-microblog-censorship

Let me know your thoughts on all this!
